PRO CYCLIST INSIGHT: Ben O'Connor REVIEWS his Van Rysel RCR Pro (how good is it REALLY?)
I spent two days riding with pro cyclist for Decathlon Ag2r, Ben O'Connor, right before he headed off to the 2024 Giro d'Italia - and spoke with him about his new Van Rysel RCR Pro and XCR race bikes. Affordable and performance oriented, but how good are these brand new offerings from Decathlon, really?
A big thank you to Ben for his time in helping make this video possible!

This video was filmed in Andorra, where many professional cyclists live and train. Riders like Jack Haig, James Knox, Pavel Sivakov, Luke Durbridge, Sepp Kuss, Robert Gesink, Julian Alaphilippe, Carlos Verona, George Bennett and others use the mountains of Andorra to train with teams such INEOS-Grenadiers, Jumbo Visma, UAE Team Emirates, EF-Education Pro Cycling. I personally have no affiliation with Decathlon or Van Rysel bikes.

Very informative video. I am looking to get back into cycling. Put on quite a few pounds over the years. Cycling has always been a fun activity for me and helps me to be more active. Will bike fitting be beneficial for someone who is 50+ lbs. overweight?

The brand name "Sika " reminded me of "Silica," a term used in motorcycle tyres I have always looked out for when buying a motorcycle tyre. For some reason, the tyre is in wet weather as the appearance looks more grippy. But I don't know if it is me. But I have found that continental cycling tyres on my road bike seem to be the grippiest.

Regarding cycling one-handed: make sure you know which hand is going to apply which brake! You don't want to suddenly apply your front brake because you have something in your right hand. Also, be willing to drop whatever is in your right hand as it's probably not worth crashing or flipping over your handlebars for. With time, you can learn to one-handed front brake only.

Ok, to comment about the title and the content. So, how riding with a poorly fitted bike is a habit? I guess it depends how you determine what habit is but I guess just getting on a bike that is poorly fitted and riding it is not really a habit. Riding your bike is probably a habit, the fact that your bike is poorly fitter, isn't. How I see it, this video has very little of doing with habits, it's more about tips. Like leaving the house without a light, it's basically a habit as the poorly fitted bike. What comes to the content, it states the obvious.

I managed to increase my vo2 max from 44 to 59 in just 4 weeks... Is this a lot? It seems quite crazy? While I naturally mixed it up in terms of intensity and did a few different types of sport, i actually just focussed purely on time and doing stuff I was in the mood for. Do you think this is just n00b gains?

That’s a massively high jump, but I’m guessing is a Garmin watch estimate? You’d have definitely made improvements but not a 15 point improvement in 4 weeks unfortunately.

#1 Avoid riding on busy roads with lots of traffic. You will be exposed to vehicle exhaust and tire dust which are insidiously toxic and harmful to your health.

May I then ask what about Zone 2 rides on the Day 7? That is what most says should be 80-90% of the total training, right? Today I will try force my self to do the intervals, or whatever I remember from the video when Im on the bike... thanks : )

Hi Tristan, amazing content, many thanks to you and John :) One question - for a cyclist with say half the time required for each weekly total (e.g. 4-5 hours per week instead of 11-13 hrs), how would you suggest adapting or adjusting each week or even each session? Is there a standard adjustment you would make? I typically don't warm up/down for more than 5mins each end, compared to the much longer times in the plan, which I guess immediately alters the weekly totals, but anything else you would suggest? Thank you again :)

I'd love even some details and insights as to how you film the videos on your phone (not just photography).
